11.29.2007 Syczed!

Damien Hirst at the Lever House
Last night, we, the O'Briens, and Dumas were taking a nice stroll down Park Avenue and, we were stopped in our tracks by this Damien Hirst window installed at the Lever House.

We instantly thought of the Sycz/Guinta clan, and had to take a picture. We then proceeded to Burger Joint and ate from one of these guys' cousins. It was delicious.

Flickr user Mayotic has some better pictures on his flickr pool. Check them out and imagine hiring Hirst to redesign your kitchen.

11.26.2007 Christmas in NY

hurray for christmas
Well. So far Christmastime in New York is a-plus.

No snow yet, but it's getting a little cold. We get to wear coats and hats. Small children go down slides with their scarves trailing behind. We don't feel bad whistling Christmassy tunes as we stroll down the street, because the chill on our cheeks and our breath in the air seems to prove that it really is a Winter Wonderland.

The OBrien's are coming in on Wednesday and we're going to see some big tree get lit up. Then we might go get lit up. (j/k dudes) It's going to be awesome.

11.22.2007 Giving Thanks

outside the fortress in the fall

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we thine unworthy servants
do give thee most humble and hearty thanks
for all thy goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all men.
We bless thee for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for thine inestimable love
in the redemption of this world by our Lord Jesus Christ,
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we beseech thee,
give us that due sense of all thy mercies,
that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful;
and that we show forth thy praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to thy service,
and by walking before thee
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost,
be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

11.12.2007 Sleevage!

sleevage's array of album covers
Sleevage is my new favorite blog.

Every day or so a beautiful record cover is posted along with discussions on fonts, interviews with the designers, alternative comps, and more.

The artwork ranges from the 60's to current releases, though I'm hoping they start working their way back to the 50's as it progresses.

They are also currently looking for writers, and I know you all like to write about music, so why not give them a shout.

This video explains the writers' perspective on the strike. Informative and interesting.

11.08.2007 Bad!

I'm pretty sure that I had never seen the full version of the Martin Scorcese / Michael Jackson "Bad" opus until last night.

I'm also pretty sure that Michael Jackson is not bad. At least, not in the way he's claiming to be.

This week Nate teaches us how to make the classic Old Fashioned, which is the grandfather of all cocktails.

According to Etymonline, the word cocktail dates from 1806 when Antoine Pechaud (of Pechaud's Bitters fame) served alcohol, water, and bitters concoctions to his friends in an egg cup (in French, coquetier). We won't be using an egg cup, but we will be making history.

So, get out your mixing glass, some ice, and let's get started.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 oz Rye Whiskey

  • 1 Sugar Cube

  • 2 Dashes Bitters

  • Splash of water

  • Twist of Orange / Lemon

  • Ice

11.05.2007 Fall!

butterflies at the natural history museum
It's fall, dudes. The leaves are starting to turn, and there's a little chill in the air.

It's pretty cool. We like it.

Saturday we went to the National History Museum (as originally promised) and took this picture of butterflies for Jen and Damion.

If you're reading this and live in New York, you should spend more time visiting the Natural History Museum. It is a fantastic place. There are people all over the country who dream of hanging out in the museum, and you're wasting the opportunity. You don't even have to go for that long. Make a lazy afternoon of it. Plus, if you show up an hour before closing time they let you in for free. No more excuses!

If you're reading this and don't live in New York, come visit New York and its Natural History Museum. You won't be disappointed. It's worth the trip. Plus, you can spend the night there. No more excuses!
