mouse and the billionaire

Friday the 9th of January, two-Thousand and eight // things of interest, things of note, things we like on our leaky boat

baby like smoke
I really want to see the Not a Cough in a Carload exhibit at the New York Public Library. These vintage cigarette ads were collected by Dr. Robert Jackler of Stanford after his mother died of cancer.

You can view the entire gallery of images here. Very interesting persuasion techniques.

I've long been fascinated by how advertisers have convinced us to do things. Maybe not convinced, but suggested. Nudged. Wink wink. It's okay. Babies like it. Hey, even Doctors smoke.

It's also interesting to me how few people see the correlation between these and current ads. Who wants a McDonalds? I'm lovin' it. Sugary breakfast cereals? Fortified with vitamins and minerals for a healthy diet. You want a new car? No. You need a new car. Drivers wanted. Like nothing else. The ultimate driving machine. Go beyond.

I'm not trying to preach anti-advertisement. Sometimes ads are hilarious. All I'm saying is that we might want to view current advertising through the lens of the past. Somehow, it may all start to make more sense.

3.27.2007 One-A-Day

Every morning we take our daily dose of Flintstone's Vitamins. L is always thrilled when she gets her childhood favourite Purple Dino My favorite used to be Orange Bam Bam, but I think there might be a new contender rearing his misguided and often misunderstood head...

White Winston

Ah, yes. When men were men and Winston tasted good - like a cigarette should.
